Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg announced that a Travis County Grand Jury today
issued a no bill after investigating an incident involving Precinct One Deputy Constable Richard
Furs and a woman picking up her grandchildren at Sims Elementary School on May 21, 2009
The incident in question came to the attention of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office
when the Texas Civil Rights Project filed a lawsuit earlier this year on behalf of the woman
against Deputy Constable Furs. Because the petition alleged possible criminal conduct by a peace
officer, the District Attorney’s office brought the matter to a Grand Jury for investigation.
The Grand Jury heard testimony from 14 witnesses during five sessions, and reviewed documents
and photographic evidence relevant to the incident before issuing the no bill.
